SOPHIE GUILFORD-SMITH
(b. 1994, Auckland, New Zealand)
Bachelor of Fine Arts, Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design, 2015

Sophie Guilford-Smith's drawing and painting practice focuses on depictions of conversations. This involves giving an idea its own character, turning the discussion into a visual in-joke.

Sometimes you will share an idea with someone that grows into something very amusing, and it is interesting to reveal the significance of your relationship with that person by cementing the moment in an image. When a drawing is translated into a large-scale painting, the significance of that moment is being emphasised.

After studying Fine Arts at Whitecliffe and graduating in 2015, Sophie now painfully waits tables following the unexpected lack of jobs to be found with an art degree. Over the past year emerged a small amount of drawing to feel like things were still going somewhere.
